Marina Azizian

Born in Leningrad in 1938.
  
Graduated in 1959 from the theatrical directing faculty of the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music and Cinematography named after N.K. Cherkasov in the class of the outstanding theatre director and artist Nikolai Akimov and worked with her teacher at the Leningrad Comedy Theatre.

The creator of graphic art and paintings, applied art, works in the technique of textile collage and patchwork. Has worked with the Lenfilm film studio for 30 years and been artistic director on more than 25 films. At the Bolshoi Theatre Azizian was artistic director for productions of Puccini’s opera La Bohème and Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake (choreography by Vladimir Vasilyev, 1996). Participant in exhibitions in Russia and abroad since 1959; had around 15 personal exhibitions in the period 1994–2012, including at the Anna Akhmatova Museum in Saint Petersburg (1994–99), the Gallery of the Artists’ Union of Russia in Moscow, the KUBUS Municipal Gallery in Hanover, Germany, the Chiesa di San Pietro in Verona, Italy and the Katholische Akademie in Freiburg, Germany.
  
Recipient of the gold medal of the Russian Academy of Arts, twice winner of the Golden Soffit, Saint Petersburg’s highest theatrical prize. Member of the USSR Cinematographers’ Union.
  
Her works can be found in the State Tretyakov Gallery, Saint Petersburg State Museum of Theatre and Music, State Tchaikovsky House Museum in Klin, State Glinka Central Museum of Musical Culture in Moscow, Ivan Goncharov House Museum in Ulyanovsk, State Museum of Children’s Theatres in Moscow and private collections.
